CNN and some other sites report that 4 democratic senators have asked Sen. Reid to reintroduce the single payor option during a reconciliation process that would avoid a Senate Filibuster. If, as it appears, that republicans are unwilling to agree to any health reform legislation, it makes sense to put back in provisions that were in the original senate bill (but dropped to get 60 votes). Of course, the side deals to get the final few votes should also be dropped. One of the more remarkable aspects of the circus in Congress is that many democrats appear afraid of supporting passage through reconciliation because it would appear "too partisan" or gimicky. (E.g., The CNN article reports: "It looks too partisan," said Rep. Gerry Connolly, a freshman Democrat from Virginia. Democratic Rep. Earl Pomeroy of North Dakota likened the move to "legislative trickery.") I wish they would wake up and smell the roses. The abuses of the fillibuster rule by republicans is not partisan or gimicky? The notion that playing nice with the right will lead to anything is absurd and the failure to exercise their the present opportunity to clean up and enact reform legislation will, I think, simply invite further gridlock across the board. Why would the republicans ever agree to compromise on any issue if the democrats will always back down to the republican 41 vote majority?
